Monarch

As Featured on CBC Newsworld!  I like to watch CBC Newsworld every morning while getting ready for work.  A former feature of morning national news cast was to display a photography everyday taken by whomever chose to submit something.  I'm not sure how CBC selected the photos or even the reason for showing them, other than human interest, but the photos were usually lovely typical vignettes of Canadiana.

I'm not usually one to send my photographs out into the world - my photography has basically been a hobby since I graduated from Fine Arts.  However, I happened to be at the Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park the weekend prior to sending this photo into the CBC.  The Estate features some lovely gardens, including these beautiful cone flowers (Echinacea) which this Monarch butterfly seemed to also appreciate.  I chased this guy for quite a while before I was able to get this shot, but I'm very happy I did! When I got home I edited it a little bit, and then on Monday morning, when Wendy Mesley introduced the picture of the day it struck me that I should submit my butterfly.  Unfortunately I missed the actual airing of the photo, I didn't even know if they would accept it let alone show it, but they did, as I soon found out from colleagues and friends who had seen it on TV a few weeks later.  I'm proud of my little butterfly, even if he is a bit kitschy and corny.

Summer Days
June 2009

I took this photo ages ago walking long a path near to my last apartment in Ottawa.  The sun was at just the right angle when I passed a patch of dandelion puffs to illuminate them in the most intriguing way.  I was inspired to play with the light and the puffs - and finally came up with this shot - I think it would make a nice album cover...hint hint musical friends :)
